Our Projects

To date more than two million Euros have been donated to 65 different organizations which have directed the funds to 250 individual projects.

Originally the organization was involved in projects that were located in Northern Germany, however HNUI is now backing projects which reach far bejond the German borders.

Some of the recipients have been well known organizations such as B.U.N.D., Naturschutzbund Deutschland, Verein Jordsand and Deutsche Umwelthilfe, some are in the organic farming community, schools and kindergarden.

With assistance from its local members overseas, the organization sponsors and oversees environmental projects in both Mexico and Costa Rica.

In 1998 HNUI held for the first time an "Ökologie im Kindergarten" (Ecology in Kindergarten) contest in Hamburg. Prizes were awarded to help support the best ideas.

Listed below are just a few of the numerous examples of HNUI's successful involvement in conservation and environmental protection projects:

Protection of Sea Birds and Nature

The organization Jordsand has been involved with the protection of sea birds and nature since 1907.

Even as far back as then , they owned the small marsh island, Hallig Norderoog, a nature reserve which due to its extreme location is very difficult to protect.

Today the organization takes care of 22 reserves predominately in the coastal region of Northern Germany.

The HNUI sponsors projects from the Verein Jordsand and has for example financed solar panels for ornithological stations and made possible the acquisition of vehicles.

Schools for an Ecologically Sound Elbe River

Since 1996 HNUI has been one of the sponsors of the project "Schulen für eine Lebendige Elbe".

The Deutsche Umwelthilfe focuses largely on bringing children and teenagers in touch with nature.

In this project they coordinate activities for 200 schools for the entire Elbe region from the mountains in the Czech Republic to the North Sea.

Making Land More Ecologically Valuable

The Buchholz chapter of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland is an organization which looks after projects in the western region of the district Harburg, near Hamburg.

Donations from HNUI made it possible for them to acquire various plots of land to increase their ecological value.

Moreover, HNUI contributed to the follow-up costs for the planted areas as well as the necessary maintenance.

Support for Organic Agriculture

HNUI supported the Stiftung Aktion Kulturland with whom they have had a long term association in their plan to help farmers convert to organic farming.

Since its founding, it has been possible for the foundation, through HNUI’s donations, to help realize the transition to organic farming at the Hof Tangsehl in Wendland, the Hof Stürzholz near Flensburg and the Arpshof near Hamburg and to put into effect various conservation projects.

Protection and Preservation of Water Resources in Costa Rica

HNUI made funds available for the Asociación para el Desarrollo Sostenible de San José Rural for a project to protect water resources in the headwaters of the rivers Rio Negro and Rio Tabarcia in Costa Rica.

For this, 140 hectares of land were purchased, 100 hectares of which will be reforested with a variety of native trees.

By informing the local population about the project and involving them, it is hoped that a raising of consciousness and even a change in attitude and behavior with regard to the environment can be achieved.
